About the work
Made in 1995, Horse with Festive Arch belongs to ESPIGA Pinto’s mature phase, when imagery rooted in the Alentejo was revisted through geometry, chromatic intensity and symbolic structure.
The horse was one of ESPIGA’s most persistent figures. Recalling his childhood, he wrote: “I was born in a house where horses passed in front of my doorstep every day, where there were also stables.” He associated the animal with beauty, form and movement, describing his attraction to the “fabulous and vertiginous horse”. Here, it appears beneath a festive arch that recalls the village celebrations, popular decoration and communal rituals of his youth.
The work reveals the continuity within ESPIGA Pinto’s oevre: rural memory is not left behind, but translated into a more synthetic visual language of circular movement, layered colour and geometric order.
