About this work
Made in 1965, Horse with Cart belongs to ESPIGA Pinto’s early engagement with the rural imagery of the Alentejo. During this period, figures, animals, carts and village life became recurring points of reference in his work, forming part of a visual vocabulary that he would continue to develop in later decades.
The woodcut shows how these subjects were already being treated with a degree of formal concentration. The horse and cart are not presented as a detailed narrative scene, but as a simplified and structured image. This balance between rural observation and symbolic reduction is important within ESPIGA Pinto’s wider oeuvre, particularly in the way later works would move between memory, geometry and emblematic form.
As an early print, Horse with Cart offers a clear connection to the artist’s Alentejo roots and to the development of motifs that remained significant across his practice.
