About the work
Made in 1987, Cosmic Pregnant-Woman with Ray of Light belongs to a moment when ESPIGA Pinto returned to maternity as a theme, following the birth of his second child in the mid-1980s. The work brings this personal context into dialogue with some of the enduring ideas that shaped his oeuvre: the female figure, geometry, memory and the artist’s reflection on the cosmos.
The subject connects closely with ideas ESPIGA Pinto expressed in his Interview in Monologue, where he spoke of the woman in relation to motherhood, transformation and the “source of life”, while also describing geometry as a structure present in the universe and in his own work. In this silkscreen print, maternity is therefore not treated only as an intimate subject, but as part of a broader symbolic language.
The work also reflects the continuity between ESPIGA Pinto’s earlier and later phases. The human form remains central, but it is organised through circular structure, light and sign. In this sense, Cosmic Pregnant-Woman with Ray of Light offers a concise example of the mature development of an oeuvre in which lived memory, symbolic figures and geometric order are repeatedly brought into relation.

Condition
The paper displays mild, scattered foxing, visible as small light-brown spots within the unprinted margins and most noticeable along the upper and side areas. The regular horizontal ribbing visible across the work is the paper’s inherent surface texture rather than a condition issue.
No tears, hard creases or surface skinning. The deliberately broken and textured passages within the composition are integral to the original printing process.
The printed image presents particularly well, retaining strong colour, clear contrasts and a vivid overall presence.
