These were not distant references for ESPIGA. After leaving the Lisbon School of Fine Arts and returning to the Alentejo in 1960, he revisited the region with adult attention, observing its fields, labour, clothing, markets, olive mills, harvest feasts and religious-pagan popular celebrations.
